Launch of Graced Life, the writings of the Rev’d Dr. John Hughes

On 26th September Graced Life: The Writings of John Hughes (1979-2014) was officially launched before a packed audience in the Webb Library of Jesus College.

The earliest essay in the volume is on King Lear. It was written while John was still an undergraduate at Jesus College and it was published at that time in the prestigious international journal Modern Theology. The essays in the book attest to the theological vigour and diversity of the late Dean of Chapel’s thought, emphasising his strong commitment to social justice.

Professor Janet Soskice, who is the President of Jesus College and who admitted John as an undergraduate, introduced the two speakers. Professor John Milbank taught John at Jesus College; he spoke of John’s theological vision and legacy. The book’s editor, the Rev’d Dr. Matthew Bullimore, was a friend of John’s. He talked about John’s work and told several amusing stories about him.

The launch was attended by Choir parents, former Choir parents, Fellows, students, staff members, and many of John’s friends, as well as John’s parents Janet and Hywel Hughes.

A framed portrait print of John by Annabel Lee, a Choir parent, was presented to Mr and Mrs Hughes. Framed and signed copies of the print are available by emailing the artist on mawsonlee@gmail.com. Mounted prints are £30 and all profits go to the John Hughes Choir Fund.
